"It begins with a single flake of snow..." - Auguste Garamonde

The regular musings of a guy less ordinary.

Ph.D student, skiier, writer, sociologist, daft about my dogs, Tarantino nut, photographer, Newcastle United fan, film buff, music hound, occasional gamer and ardent student of history.

I go bat loopy for the Tarantino-verse, snow covered mountains, Arcade Fire, Chucky (yes, Charles Lee Ray), the life and times of Ryo Hazuki, Nineteen Eighty-Four, the Discworld, DCI John Luther, happenings in Middle Earth, Ghana, Jack Bauer, dystopic dwellings and adventures in the neo-noir.

"Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows" - George Orwell

""When people ask me if I went to film school I tell them 'no, I went to films.'"
-- Quentin Tarantino

I had a busy spring, very busy. But not too busy to not squeeze a nice assignment inbetween other nice assignments. These are Angry Birds Telepods photographs shot for Rovio during March – May 2014.
Always love seeing Avanaut’s work.

One Run, One Fall & Lots of Pow

Don’t let it be said I don’t share my more embarrassing ski footage. Here’s a run at Crescent Spur Heli-Skiing last season. Loads of pow, including a demonstration of why your GoPro does not like face shots, and how not to stop when you get a little too close to a fellow skier.

WARNING: This footage may contain freshies, expletives and whooping.

Ski Club of Great Britain Snowcast insert - Whistler is over from Dan Habershon-Butcher on Vimeo.

I am a volunteer mountain leader for the Ski Club of Great Britain. When I am out in a resort I often film and edit short pieces for inclusion in their weekly online Snowcast….

This is a piece I did for them at the end of 3 weeks leading people around the mountains of Whistler in Canada.

I shot it with my handycam and my GoPro helmet camera…

Footprints in the Sand

“One night I dreamed a dream. As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me,I looked back at the footprints in the sand.I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints.
This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. “Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,You’d walk with me all the way.But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints.I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.”
He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave youNever, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints,It was then that I carried you.”
